Good news! My golden retriever doesn’t have an intestinal blockage and so will not need surgery. He likely has an irritable tummy from getting into the brownies – a lesson he unfortunately won’t remember. He came home yesterday feeling a little better and should be himself again in a few days. Thankfully, the vet didn’t jump to conclusions and operate without having conclusive results of a blockage. He certainly went to the vet with all of the symptoms of blockage. Thankful for barium x-rays today!

So often I hear women say, they can’t lose the weight fast like they could 10, 20 years ago. Our bodies have changed quite a bit and it usually takes a few years (and added pounds) before we realize we have to work a little harder to lose weight now.

First of all, diet is one of those 4 letter words your mother told you never to say. Diet says, don’t eat today, eat it tomorrow. That doesn’t work for women over 40. But that’s ok, we can adjust! Don’t give up.

Remember how I have talked about making sure you are eating enough of the right foods? Here’s why. As you are losing weight, you are losing that dreadful fat on your body. When we lose fat, according to a 2011 New England Journal of Medicine study, we have some hormonal changes. Leptin, the hormone that tells us when we are full decreases and gherlin increases, the hormone that let’s us know we are hungry. I know, a bad combination. What’s worst is that those levels can remain in that state for up to a year after “dieting”. So when you starve yourself for 6 months, and then go back to normal eating, the normal is eating more because of the hormone levels and then in 6 months we have gained the weight back and those pounds brought friends.

In addition, there are significant health risks of the lose weight fast diets. According to Jessica Bell’s post on AZCentral are these risks:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Heart Disease
  • Muscle loss which leads slower metabolism which leads to fat increase
  • The more “lose weight fast diets” you have been on make it increasingly difficult to lose weight

Lose weight fast diets won’t work. Don’t get caught up in the buzz words and urgency to feel better.

Healthy living isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. It will be worth it in the end.
